But I tried to skimp because I had moved 1500 miles from my other Printer - this is no good. It rattles lie it's a rocket ship about to take off. It jams the paper 9 times out of ten. It takes a really long time to print one page. Save your money and get something else- Another BROTHER!!

The features I like include: double sided printing; scan feeder; tilted control panel; ink cartridges are easy to install and reasonably priced. On a mac, I needed to down load Brother's app in order to use the scanner but it also worked great (and much better than mac's standard scanner interface).

It was so good I purchased 8 of them, including one laser printer for the company owner. They were terrific. I finally needed a new printer for home and ordered this one. Easy to set up, great quality printer.

This model mfc-j491dw is by far the fastest printer as regards the response time to the "print" command. There are faster PPM printers but for my application this is the best value for my money.

Copy and scan features are simple to use.I recommend this printer for any low-volume home use. However... ink cartridges are expensive for the amount of printed pages they produce. In my experience color "compatibles" work fine, but the Black Compatible not so well. I removed 1 star because of the low number of printed pages per ink cartridge.

I have always used HP Printers before and always had trouble with them not excepting HP cartridges that I bought. Our local senior center uses a Brother Printer so I thought I would try one. It did take some getting use to but the way it performs I just love it. I will not go back to HP printers. My pick will always be Brother from here on out. Keep up the good work for such a quality printer, thanks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent combination of features. This all-in-1 printer has all the expected features plus fax capability for when I (rarely) need it. The print speed is acceptable and the control panel is usable. The biggest challenge appears to be dealing with the wi-fi connection. If you are working in a secure networking environment, you will need to figure out how to get around your local firewalls. I'm still investigating why I can't use wi-fi to connect to my new printer, but I did succeed in using the hardwired connection. I'm fairly sure my problem is related to router firewalls and not with the printer itself. Resolving that sort of issue can be frustrating if you are a computer novice.

So far I do not use the scanner section as I have another scanner already set up and operational. I also don't use the fax feature at all. I guess I woud give it that last star if I had used it longer and could make use of those "other" features. :

I really thought this printer could keep up with my demands but it burned through the ink. ALL OF MY INK. My biggest issue is the fact that it does not allow you to use other companies for the replacement ink. It will only take BROTHER INK that is MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE PRINTER!!! So I had to replace it. Shame, I only used it for a month and 2 weeks out of it I could not print.

The FAQ did not apply and Brother help during the Covid 19 seems on vacation. Somehow, the entire area in control panel: printers was disabled. There are likely technical terms for what happened, all I know is I lost the ability to print from anything. I finally found the solution, not Brother. I am presently hating this printer due to their software. It does print ok, the color is fine and I expect it to be a good product. Fairly quiet, not much louder than the laser it replaced.

I never had owned one previously and it was remarkably easy to get set up, and has had no problems since! I was relieved I could find this printer and it was available. After CoVid breakout, I had challenge finding available printer with an acceptable delivery. This one was available and arrived quickly, and was a God send. I am now a Brother believer.

Is it possible to have a setting where it stays on (or asleep)? Other than that, it's great. My wife, who now works at home, uses it more than I do and she likes it too.

So far I have used it to print a few documents for a friend and a picture for myself. It seems easy to use at this point. The most use will be for a Christmas letter which will go with my Christmas cards.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overall better than HP Envy The 'Brother' printer self-cleans; the 'HP Envy' printer does not and the cleaning function needs to be constantly performed on the 'Envy'. The 'Brother' printer has separate cartridges for cyan/yellow/magenta/black, clearly denoting cartridge ink levels. Furthermore, the 'Brother' printer's ink cartridges do not deplete automatically, whereas the 'HP Envy' ink cartridges constantly needed to be replaced, even when little to no printing had been performed for an extended time frame. The 'Brother' printer has a scan function that allows page insert prior to a page already scanned; the 'HP Envy' does not. The only major drawback shared by both printers is that a scan function ought to default to the ENTIRE scan area. I am not sure why limitations are preset for the scan size when the scan window is a fixed size anyway. Overall the 'Brother' printer outperforms the 'HP Envy' in terms of ink efficiency and reliable printing output, yet the scan defaults stand for common-sense improvement.

It's the perfect size for my personal computer desk, and it can scan, copy (and fax but I don't use that, both in color and black/white. It's fast and pretty quiet.

Chatted again and the tech couldn't help me. It's the slowest printer I have ever had. Couldn't return to store because of COVID19.

You only need to change the color that is out instead of wasting ink on a tri-color cartridge. Not super fast printing but sufficient.

It got good reviews from Consumer Reports. It has a small foot print for all it does. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't print if any cartridge runs out of ink. I had to pay more for it because it is in short supply. Maybe it out of production.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Second-rate Mac software I installed this printer on my network and I was really annoyed to discover it can't scan documents printed on both sides of the page. This capability does not require any special hardware; the software should direct you to put the document through twice, once for each side of the page. Then it interleaves the images, giving you a two-sided scan. This is not something I do very often but not having it when I need it is a real pain. I am going to get rid of this printer and get one whose manufacturer made a better effort for the users.

This time chose the cheaper option 491model and is doing a good job for my home needs. I plan to enroll in ink subscription service for supplies to be genuine brother and the convenience. Brother has been trusted in my household from my first sewing machine 55plus yrs ago lasting some 40yrs, to my 2nd sewing machine after that. So why not for my office needs s well. Thx Brother.

If you don't replace the ink cartridges, the printer forces a pop up message to appear on the computer monitor every couple of minutes stating you need to change the cartridges. Per contact with Brother support, these will only go away if I change the ink cartridges. I saw your message and I choose to ignore it. Please have a way to turn off these messages or make them appear only once a week.

The Brother printer was easy to set up and use and has been much easier to use. I don’t think the print quality is quite as good but it’s more than adequate for my home use. My only complaint is the way it needs to be set up to use with my iPhone - I have to change my WiFi settings on my phone to connect each time. Love the auto feed feature.

Being able to print from my mobile. Though I didn't like that it wasn't able to scan a paper on both sides by itself, but it did it asking the user to turn or change the document to be scanned.

It was not worth the money. I could not return it to Amazon and now I am stuck with a printer that doesn't print but copies great. It doesn't help me if it doesn't print. I haven't had any success with the company returning it either. It has been more of a headache than anything. The print cartridges are so expensive too. I am stuck with those that I can't use too..... just no good at all.....

The Brother wireless printer is a great addiction to your home office. It`s not super bulky and I love that the paper is stored inside the machine. The set up is time consuming as you have to download the latest firmware and it can be abit noisy, but once complete it`s super easy to use and prints very quickly. This printer was easy to assemble and the directions were very easy to read. I liked how easy it was to connect the printer to my computer and cell phone. I just downloaded the Brother iPrint&Scan app, followed the prompts to connect to my network, and I was ready to go. The display panel on the printer is easy to read and easy to follow. The buttons on the display panel are just the right size. Loading the ink and paper was not difficult, however the paper tray is a little awkward. The one thing that I did not like was that the USB port is in a very unusual location. I wish it was located on the outside of the printer like most comparable printers.Printing, scanning, and copying was simple and done the same way as most printers. The ppm was comparable to other printers this size as well. The color copies looked pretty good on regular paper and when using glossy paper the colors where vibrant. Overall, this printer meets my expectations for an all-in-one printer. I was pleased with the quality of the printing and ease of assembly and set-up. I would recommend purchasing this printer for small office/home needs.

My printer is in another room from my laptop where I do most of my work so every printer "mishap" requires getting up and checking what may be wrong this time. This Brother Printer does not have "mishaps" at least not yet. I'm very pleased, it may be a tad slower than previous printers but when I select "print" it prints. I like that.

The printer setup was simple, although longer than I`ve experienced with other printers, and didn`t require much reference to the user guide. I found the user interface with the arrow keys a bit frustrating and would have expected more touch screen capabilities for a new printer device. The ink cartridges and paper were very easy to load, and it was quick and easy to print documents from my mac. The quality of my black and white print jobs was good, but color printing seemed a bit muted. I was unable to print from my iPhone, and will need to do some research on making the printer discoverable on my phone. The copy and scan features were also simple, but I have not used the fax feature yet, as I rarely have occasion to send or receive faxes. I like how compact and light the printer is, given that I`m using it for my home office, and I have very limited space. Overall, a decent printer for basic business needs, and I received excellent customer support when I called in for some questions on connecting my printer to my home wifi.

Pros: Very easy set-up for one individual, lightweight, easy to load with paper and to replace ink cartridges. Simple to print from Android phone with Brother app.Cons: Prints slowly, concerns about long-term durability, as plastic pieces of printer feel thin and possibly less durable. Printed items seem to print a bit lighter than I may have expected.Overall this is a good home printer unit for light/occasional use. It`s really nice to be able to easily print documents from my phone and other devices. Compared to other home printers I`ve used, I was surprised by this unit as it felt a bit flimsy. I don`t believe this impacted print quality, but my initial concern is its long-term durability. There`s also a small LCD screen on the front of the printer that feels like it would be a touch screen, but it`s not. I`m always surprised at how slowly home printers print, and this printer is no exception. I cannot comment on value for cost, as I was provided this item at no charge in exchange for an unbiased review.

The color prints slower than black and white but is still on the fast side. I have been pleased with the quality of photos and printing and the lack of trouble with paper getting stuck. This may not be fancy or a laser printer, but it is the best I have ever owned and it has not disappointed, either.

It came with extra ink, too, and I see that as huge bonus, too! I used it to print two-sided to regular weight paper, and I also got it to print to cardstock two-sided, too. I got it particularly to print to fabric, but have not tried that out on this yet. It was pretty easy to set up, too!

Upon receiving the printer, opened the box and carefully read the instructions. Refreshing that the printer was basically a plug & play printer. It was not difficult to install at all. Also after doing my research on pricing of replacement ink, the ink cartridge replacements were not expensive. The calibration of the printer was rather easy as well. Copies were clear and crisp. Both black & white copies and color copies were clear and crisp. The ink did not run. The prints from the printer function were dry crisp prints as well. The two-sided printing was easy. Instructions for all printer functions were easy to follow. All-in-all a very user friendly printer with multi-functionality, that is easy to install and use.

I`m very happy with this printer! I work from home so I really need a reliable printer that #1 is easy to use, #2 doesn`t suck down ink and #3 works when I need it to! So far, the Brother MFC has met my needs. It`s compact, small enough to fit on my tiny work station, but still has lots of features and functions. I appreciate that I can use it from any device with Bluetooth without the need for a USB connection, and the ability to print from the cloud is helpful. Also good is that it holds lots of paper, unlike other small printers I`ve used that take about 20 sheets and need constant refilling. Set up was simple and easy (once I actually read the instructions when I tried to just do it on my own it didn`t work but that was user error.The only complaint I have is that it`s not the fastest printer I`ve ever used and does take a bit longer per page than I expected. Kind of a weird thing is that it prints slower from my husband`s PC than from my MacBook. However, the scanner is super fast and as I use that feature a lot for work, that makes up for the slightly slower print speed. Overall, the easy set-up (once I read the instructions), versatility, and ease of use overshadow the slower printing speed so I do recommend this printer.

It's fairly easy to use and I managed without having to refer to the manual. Haven't had to replace the toner yet and I'm hoping that won't be too much of a project. This printer is the best wireless printer I`ve experienced so far. There was basically no assembly needed, just insert the paper tray. The set up(to wifi) was easier than I`ve experienced in the past, and once connected, I was instantly able to print. With other printers, they would constantly go offline or they would be delays in printing. I have not experienced that with this printer, and I am thoroughly satisfied. I love this printer, it is so easy to use!

First, I`ll start by saying that this printer was perfect for my home office. I absolutely love the wireless setup and the capability of printing from my cellphone. The printer came in a well packaged box with quick and easy setup instructions. It took me less than 10 minutes to setup the printer ,install the software and begin printing. I`ve had to print a bunch of documents in the past few days for work and it has held up pretty good so far. The picture quality is very high and the colors are spot on. I downloaded the mobile app and tested that as well. The app shows me the ink levels and I can print pictures directly from my phone. (Which came out great!) This is a much needed upgrade from my previous printer that still needed to be connected to my computer in order to print. I don`t have to deal with bulky cords and can print right from my couch!My only complaint would be the size of the printer. It`s a little big but being that it is wireless, I can put in in the corner somewhere in order not to take up too much space. The scan and copy feature both were quick after the initial testing. I ran into some firewall problems as first but it was resolved after reviewing software information again. Ultimately a pretty neat product and will definitely put it to great use!

No more need to hook up a cable to print! The downside! The software that comes with the printer is for Windows, I use Linux for my OS. So I can print but the scan and other features are lost on me. This is not limited to Brother, Most companies forget there is another OS other than Windows and Mac.

I had no trouble putting the product together.Print Quality: This printer has a good print quality. The ink usage is not too bad. When printing photos on paper, it works very well.Connection: This product does very well with connecting wirelessly to my phone and my pc. There doesn`t seem to be any lag time between sending the command to print and the actual printing.Problems: There were two small problems that I had. The initial installation to my pc took a very long time. I am not sure, however, if there is anything that can be done about this. My other small problem is the amount of paper this printer holds. I think that it is a great printer for home use, but I am not sure if it would be great in a home/small office environment. Favorite Feature: My favorite feature of this product is that I can check on my printer from my phone. I can print from my phone and scan documents. When the documents are scanned from my phone, the scanned documents appear on my phone!

I copied an insurance card and the colors were so vivid, and the image was amazing. It doesn't seem to use a whole lot of ink for what I've done so far- I consider that a plus. It was really easy to hook up and connect to wifi. I've printed from my phone and laptop, with no issues. The ink is not runny after printing, and the quality of the print is awesome! I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

I received this product in exchange for my unbiased opinion.I really like this printer! I have never had a wireless printer and it`s easy.The Brother Printer was really easy to set up. The quick start paper as well as the prompts on the screen of the printer itself were clear. It took a little time for my computer to download the program and then find the printer, but not long enough that I was annoyed. It`s quick and prints well. It also has an app that you can print from on your phone. I`m not as a fan of the app. I print a lot of music off of websites and it just doesn`t format them well. However, it does print off of goggle docs and that is very helpful.I used the copy function and that worked well. I don`t use fax but it`s nice to know I can use it if need be. The only thing I would change is how loud the printer is when it`s printing. I like that I could be in the other room and know it was working however, more then once I scared my husband and my kids because they didn`t know what was happening. Over all, I like this product. It`s a great upgrade from my old printer and it looks nice on our bookshelf. (it doesn`t stick out with the paper-tray!)

Set up, including wireless, was easy. Filling paper is also easy. Print rate is good. Document feed is a bit slower than my previous printer, but tolerable. Labels on control buttons are a bit confusing because the print is small, but with a few days of regular use, it becomes second nature. Overall, I like this printer. (I haven't had to replace the starter ink yet, so I don't know how ink price would have affected my review)

I really enjoy my new printer. Setup was easy and instructions were clear. My favorite feature was the fact that you can print items directly from your mobile device and it has the wifi printing. The printer offers not only a flatbed but a feeder, which helps when scanning multiple pages and also wanting it to be one file vs. scanning page-by-page and then having to merge all the files together to create one document. Navigation of the menu was pretty easy but I think a touchscreen option would be nice. Image quality is clear and margins are precise (something hard to find with economic printers. Overall, I`d recommend the Brother printer as it`s an inexpensive but valuable option for all of your printing, scanning, and faxing needs for your home or office.

It's so easy to use, it tells you when it's fussy (let's be real, all printers are fussy but some are good communicators, and so far the ink has looked really good on paper. I'll let you know when I need to replace te cartridges but so far I am loving it.

My pictures are bright and colourful and when I print they are all washed out and I've tried changing setting in the colour menu and nothing changes. Am very frustrated as I'm an artist and need good quality prints. I didn't have any problem with my last printer. Black printing seems okay.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SOOO DIFFICULT TO USE!! TERRIBLE UX DESIGN!! I have an older Brother printer, and it works sooo well! EASY! You click, print, and it PRINTS! But this one!!! TERRRIBLE!! I bought this for work, so I wouldn't have to email from my work to my personal computer to print. It would say offline when I'm trying to print, so I again, I would email my document to my personal email, and print on the older Brother Printer. The screen doesn't have easy to follow directions too, even when I was scanning, I thought it had saved my email, as it showed a profile. But no, i had to enter it again, and it didn't even show up in my email. I had to take photos and email my documents..... I saw some youtube reviews and said this was good. Terrible, I don't even know if i can resell it.

Don't like the initial setup of printer, easy to setup time and date, don't like tutorial taking over the screen for installing ink, you have to use starter ink to get it setup otherwise, printer won't get past tutorial page for installing ink. Should be customers right to put what ever size/oem/after market cartridge they like right off the bat, stop trying to make things dummy proof and get back to previous model designs for setup.

Customer care/tech support could have cared less. The supposed "starter" ink was not in the box and had to buy ink. The printer is slower than molasses going up hill in December. If you can afford to avoid this product, spend a little bit more and get something of quality.

I like that fact it can scan and print legal size paper. It appears to be especially stingy with ink which is a most welcome feature as my last "other brand" printer was a gobbler. Printing speed is on a par with other printers I've owned especially when allowing for proper drying time between two sided prints. Overall an excellent buy.

So far it's working out great. I use the scanning, copying, and printing features regularly. Set-up was easy, but that might have been partly because I'm not new to printers, or to Brother. Scans are clear and pretty accurate for color. Printing may be a little slower than with my old 427, but that could be my imagination. I'm very happy with my new Brother!

You should be ashamed for selling something like this. I went back to get the official brother ink. It still does not work. It runs test pages and supposedly cleans itself. It's total junk. Will never buy this brand again.

I love how it turns on and off so quickly and connects to the internet right away. I also like the ink levels right on the display and that the color cartridges are separate and easy to install It is very easy to use and love using the icon to scan.

First let me say that I am a stay at home mom with 3 kids, homeschooling through a pandemic, and I do accounting from an office at home so I use the printer quite a bit. Bought this printer to replace my old HP ENVY that decided to break down at the beginning of tax season and I have by far been blown away. It’s fast, was so easy to set up and I have yet to have any issues. Also ordering extra ink was a complete breeze and came pretty quickly.

A hard copy of your orders and/or cancellations can save you all kinds of problems. You can also easily scan legal documents, directions etc.. Facing capabilities can save you lots of time and money. The quality of the print is super! It’s straight forward and easy to use. If you want to scan you press the button that says “scan”, not some ridiculous button with arrows, a toggle button, and print so small you can’t read it!

This printer does everything I needed, and works great. It is not the fastest printer, but I am printing a very low volume. The scanning features work great, and my favorite part is that it is very seamless to setup on the wifi. I can print from my phone or my computer with no wires needed. This let me tuck it away in a small corner of the room - freeing up valuable deskspace.

It does color or black and white, 2-sides printing, copy and scanning, and prints wirelessly. I think it can also be set up as a fax machine. Great value for the price. The only thing I was not happy with out-of-the-box is that color print quality. The default seems like a lower quality print job, so I need to take time to see if I can get the color printing more sharp when needed.

My sister told me about her Brother and how much she liked it. So glad I listened to her. Love the way it loads paper. I print a lot of color for art projects. Very pleased with results. I had a lot of Epson ink left over, but it was worth the loss of the ink to get this much superior printer.

The features on this printer are all in the front so I can load paper, change ink, etc., without having to get out of my chair. The price point was excellent. My only little annoyance is that the printer goes to sleep. Eventually I will learn to wake it up before I try to print something.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it, it's my third Brother MFC! I have had two other Brother MFC printers, which served my well in the past, each lasting approximately eight years. Great value, great product. No brainer for me to choose another, when considering a new printer purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lot it! So far I like everything about this printer. It was easy to set up and does a nice job of printing and copying (haven't faxed or scanned yet). The only negative I've found is the paper tray is very thin plastic and I feel like I have to be careful with it or it will break. The printer was VERY reasonably price and it's been worth every penny spent :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not suitable as network printer I bought the printer to use as a network printer. It connected okay and I actually used it a few times. But it was very unreliable. It had a sleep mode, for some reason, and there was no way to disable it. So, if I didn't use for a day or so, it would be asleep when I needed it. I set my router to "wake it up" but it didn't always work. So, I would have to go the printer and wake it up manually before I could use it. A network printer should be ON all the time and available whenever it is needed. Eventually, it was too much hassle, so returned it.

It was easy to set up, the wireless connection was a breeze, the scanning & printing are great, card making is terrific, it's efficient, pages load & print quickly, & it's quiet! Haven't had to get ink yet, but I'm signed up for the order when low feature. I HIGHLY recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Black ink lasts about 20 pages Black ink that came with printer lasted about 20 pages. I wish that the product description has stated that. Customer support has said they will send me a new black ink cartridge, but also stated that ink that comes with printer is only for head cleaning and will print "some documents." Otherwise the printer and scanner works well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Constantly runs out of yellow ink without (colour) printing I've printed not even a tenth of a pack of paper since I bought this machine and I had to replace cartridges three times. The printer keeps running out of yellow ink, even though almost all printing is done in black & white. Between the last cartridge change and today I printed 15 pages tops (all b&w) and somehow the yellow cartridge is completely empty?! The printer flat out refuses to print, even though I set it to print in black & white only. I thought they were different than Epson and HP, but I guess not. I don't think I'll ever buy a Brother again, I'll just print at work or the library. I'll take that inconvenience over the inconvenience of thinking I can print whenever I want and realizing at 10pm that I can't and I also have nowhere to go to fix it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brother MFC-J491DW Printer This is a great printer. It was recommended to me by my tech person and he was right! Very flexible printer with a lot of features and the scan quality, even when set to default is excellent. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little printer and scanner for light duty This printer replaced my old "other brand" printer and has been doing me very well. All I need is a light duty home use printer for occasional printing and scanning. Set up was very easy, it is easy on the ink usage (have not used up the sample ink that came with it yet after a month, and does what I need, printing and scanning. I have also been able to get it to print envelopes and legal size paper for me which is a plus.
