Rated 5 out of 5 by from PCL XL Errors on 3 out of 4 units Had the PCL XL Error with 3 of the 4 units of the m404dn variety. It's an error that just prints your job with a blank page saying there was an error. Sometimes it will get stuck in the windows spool and cause your other print jobs to fail. 10/10 do no recommend this model.

Nothing I do will make the printer work! It's so frustrating! I dismal experience after many happy years with other HP printers.

They had an older M401 and it was just plain worn out from daily use. They wanted another similar printer. They are very happy with this latest iteration. The quality and output are consistent with the older printer. It met all expectations. As an IT support person I was pleased with the ease of installation and flexibility of networking options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poor software I own a 401 and the duplex printing worked with my having to do nothing. With the 404 I had to go online, link the printer online and change the settings to allow the printer to automatically duplex print. Ridiculous!

The only thing I would say is if you are printing high numbers you need to stay around while printing so you can reload the letter sized tray. In other words, I use mine as a dual tray printer. It does not take the whole ream of paper at one time. I like the design regarding the printed documents. They stay neatly stacked after printing. You don't have to worry about papers flying off the printer like with the Brother comparable model. I am very happy with my purchase.

Nothing worked. Gave up and now using USB instead. Printer works fine now. Have had several HP printers without any problems, except for this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from null HP I bought the printer last week when my HP LaserJet P2035 would not work after only 3-4 years of low use. HP would not service my P2035, and Microsoft techies thought the problem was a driver issue for which we needed HP’s assistance. On the recommendation of a Customer service representative, I purchased the HP LaserJet pro M404dn. The representative told me he was giving me "a bargain because you've been such a loyal customer." It did not arrive the day after, but a week later. The product did not have the extra cartridge promised. The price I paid was no "bargain!" I found it online, new, on several sites, including HP itself, for EXACTLY the "bargain" price I paid!!! The install was too complicated for me to perform, I had to call HP several times, go through the frustrating multiple transfers and hang-up calls, repeating the information requested over 20 times! Three plus (3+) hours, one Customer service representative asked I allow her to install my printer remotely, which she did. A couple of issues came up after her install, I had to call again and go through the hang-u and transfers several times again, for another frustrating hour! I have been using HP products for decades, but I have been very disappointed with the customer service, the transfers to the Philippines during normal USA daytime working hours, and I have found communicating with HP to be taxing, frustrating, and fraught with communication difficulties where I would say one thing, hear the Rep say something I hadn’t said, and so on. I was also quite vexed to observe that HP is using so much surveillance on what is printed with the printer I paid for and now own! Read the privacy statement…if you don’t accept HP’s terms…well then you can’t print! This is a purchase that comes with lots of electronic strings attached and I don’t like it. I like the printer, I have enjoyed HP’s products for decades, but I’d like to own my products outright without any electronic interference from HP. As to the following question, “Would you recommend this product to a friend, the system gives only two choices YES or NO. In light of the impossibility to caveat my answer, then, I will have to say NO. I expect the product will work fine…but for how long??? I don’t care for the electronic monitoring and ties attached to it. The customer service I experienced was lousy and inefficient, frustrating, and time-consuming. My previous products, up to the P2035 did not last 3 to 4 years, but 15-20, so I am rather suspicious about this new product M404dn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Hardware, software problems When I added the printer to my network two of my PCs installed GREAT with full functionality. Two other systems failed, even after many hours of effort. After two hours of HP tech support also trying to solve the installation glitch we gave up and manually hacked the driver into Windows 10. So it wasn’t a great consumer experience, but thanks to a good tech I’m now up and enjoying a great printer!

I chatted online and the technician was rude and took forever. He took 3-5 minutes to respond to my question then responded with IT SAYS ON THE DATA SHEET THAT IT DOESN'T COME WITH ONE. Then told me I had to buy one. I would prefer to have purchased from Staples and know that it arrives next day,

This printer has many of the same features, and then some. I have not had the printer long enough to try everything, but what I have used I like. I immediately noticed that this model is quite faster than the old one. I'm sure this printer will fill all our office needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Horrible This printer was bought for a special ed. class in a school system. Our computer techs hooked it up and from day 1 we have had nothing but trouble from it. Most of the time, it won't print, at all. It will say it's printing on the screen, but nothing comes out. We have to turn it off, turn it on, turn it off, turn it on. Sometimes it will print after that. We have tried changing the paper settings from a regular weight paper to a heavy weight. It won't print. Our computer techs have been here every day since we attempted to start using the printer. Yesterday one of them referred to this printer as a demon. It isn't user friendly, at all. The small screen will tell you to do one thing, but when you attempt to change the settings, it won't let you. We even printed off the online manual and that doesn't help either. If I could give this o stars, I would. Our school secretary is attempting to send it back. Our school system was delayed in opening because of Covid, so it's past the time to return it, but she is trying. I would not recommend this printer to anyone.

I purchased the extra tray for legal and it dies not want to detect automatically. Also having issues with legal jamming constantly and spent 45 minutes trying to get the jammed paper out.

Unfortunately, it is not. The HP warranty support rep said that it fits but it doesn't work. You have to use the expensive 58A cartridges. Total rip off. And they need to fix the website.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick setup - works with Apple Bonjour! I bought this printer to replace a much older 1200 dpi network-capable laser jet. I had previously dedicated a computer server to share the old printer on my network for other computers, but the M404dn simply appeared in the macOS print destination list via Bonjour - so I didn't even need to set up the server! This is very convenient. The HP does not have WiFi itself, but my WiFi connects wired network, and this allows the printer to show up on WiFi, too, without any additional setup. Great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice little office printer I purchased this to replace my HP 2420 which I have had for years, I really like the M404, it is quiet and prints fast with the exception of tray 1, which is slower. I would have given 5 stars if the capacity for printed items was not limited. When printing envelopes I can only print 20-25 before I have to remove them and allow the machine to continue to print.

Once set up it will print however the tray 1 (top tray that flips out) has issues recognizing and picking up the letter paper.

Back in 1990, the BGL printer/plotter which came standard with Postscript, PCL, HPGL, Calcomp, Tektronix, and others could auto select between all of them. This is as far as HP has come?

If you need a printer that functions with a wire, THIS PRINTER IS FOR YOU. Unfortunately, my university's WIFI does not allow wireless printers to connect. I'm sure that if you wanted it to function as wireless it would, but if you're like me, looking for a printer that works with a Mac and with a wire, this is perfect. Be warned, however, it does not come with a wire and you will have to purchase your own. Overall I am extremely impressed with this product.

I set up 3 Macs and two PCs to print in just a few minutes.

I was amazed at speed of printing. Also the double side feature...was not aware until paper went running back in to do that. Whoa I thought... nice. The size is good for where I do this on table in kitchen nook. Not taking up a lot of room. I been taught by video how to change the toner cartridge. Took a look and seems easy enough for me. All in all great..wish I had done color too but for now this is great to work on my book. I need reliable, so I can print, edit, print, etc. The price was very fair I feel.

It offers easy setup, paper size options, double sided printing, auto-on/off, Wi-Fi connectivity, and print from mobile. Better yet, it doesn't compromise on the printer dimensions or speed to facilitate these benefits. The printer is small and inconspicuous, fitting in with nearly any office decor. And its speed is impressive; I think this printer can go head-to-head with the printer/copiers you'd find in the workplace. It is quiet and efficient and makes every print job effortless. In truth, the work is limited to hitting print and picking up the job. I also get the impression that the toner is built to last awhile. Highly recommend!

I would have connection problems and error problems nonstop with my old printer. This one is a life saver! Easy to set up and connect to Ethernet for print jobs. I can print from my phone too which saves the task of having to turn on my computer. The pages print fast and are crystal clear with perfect font lines. The screen is easy to read and overall the printer is very cost effective. Will be an asset to my home office. Overall I would highly recommend this printer to anyone and definitely will buy HP products again!

It did take me a little while to get it figured out but I honestly love it. I'm not a pro or really tech savy but others can have it going in no time. It's the fastest printer I've ever had or worked with. This is great for home and office use. I highly recommend this model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, quiet, and reliable Very pleased with this printer, I did my research and I couldn’t pass up an HP printer. They are reliable and they have great customer service. As for the printer, the size of the printer is very comparable to an inkjet. The print speed is amazing at 40 pages per minute very fast. It's very conveniently wifi enabled. The printer doesn't have to sit right next to your computer. Just by downloading the HP Smart App, I was able to find it easily with my phone and was able to print without any issues. This model has the ability to print on both sides of the paper, very convenient. It also supports letter, legal and executive sizes. Another feature that I love is the quiet mode. I have a three year old that still naps during the day. And he often falls asleep in my bedroom where the printer is located. This allows me to still do my work and print without it being so noisy. One Con to this printer is the replacement toners. They are pricey, so we'll see how long the included cartridge lasts. Overall this is a very nice home office printer and I would recommend it to my friends.

I will never understand how the toner is more expensive than the printer. Trying a remanufactured toner, HP now have chips on their cartridges which will not allow us no other choice but to spend $250+ to only use HP toner.

One thing is that there is no wireless or Bluetooth connection and the printer didn’t come equipped with a print-USB cable. I had to purchase one for both printers. It’s seems it should really be standard since that’s the only way you can print from your computer.

I am able to print from my phone, my wifi laptop and my corded laptop. Prints fast at great quality. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bypass Tray is amazing! Prints checks/forms! We needed a printer that would print the checks and forms in the bypass tray and we found it! You can leave the main drawer open and print from the bypass, which means you never have an override and end up printing on regular paper instead of on your checks/forms! For our business, that's an invaluable feature! Also, it was quick to set up. From box to print, probably less than 10 minutes time. It also ques quickly and is printing in seconds and prints super fast! It's everything we were looking for and more! I can't believe the small footprint and how light it is! Great job HP!!!

A foreign-born associate failed to ask me what my needs were and told me this would replace my previous HP 3019 printer. It replaced it in price, but not in quality. For $309, it is a ripoff. Jams constantly, pulls from the wrong trays if one runs out of paper, so I have to sit in front of it and try to add paper without it jamming. I hope to buy a decent HP printer or I will change back to a Brother.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not HPs most shining moment, but 404s are good The M404dn is a great printer and I've put them in several of my customer's offices. I also use them in my own office. I was very disappointed that the network interface on this one was dead on arrival, however due to the customer's limited needs and in an effort to save time, trouble, and hassle for the customer, I used the USB port with a long active USB cable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Installation miserable experience The unit worked flawlessly using USB from my mac, Networking not so much. Spent without exaggeration 3 hours trying to configure the thing. The instructions that came with the printer are for a slew of printers, so confusing as heck since some things apply some don't. The HP Admin Utility download returns all kinds of " This file will damage your computer" and "Malware" warnings. The install won't let you proceed unless you zap these files so I'll have to spend more time finding and cleaning out a partial install of a utility that won't run. I was also shock that at this price point there is no WIFI functionality so i have to run more cable ugh. Just a miserable experience overall. The only thing that makes it all tolerable is that you go in knowing it's going to be exactly that so you're somewhat prepared.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not as advertised or described The printer works fine, however, it is not as described or advertised. I was looking for a printer with 2 paper trays, and it says that it has 2 paper trays, but that is misleading. The 1 tray is a feeder tray, not a paper tray.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great printer, bad support This is a reliable little simple printer. If you need one like it, hardwire internet only, no WiFi connectivity, I would recommend this. We've had these at our company for a years and I like them. The only reason for the missing star is HPs support is not great. So a great printer, but not the best company.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality printer but only prints two sided Even with duplex printing disabled, this printer only prints two sided. If you need a printer that prints one sided, this isn’t for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not happy Product isn't good at all. I have to print "heavy" to get it print viewable good text and that makes printer slower. The xtra sheet tray add-on....not even sure it works. Not happy at all.
